Kettle Valley Railway (British Columbia)

A 1914 photo of a dry wall foundation abutment for this historic train trestle bridge in the Rockies in British Columbia. This structure is still there and was not replaced when they rebuilt the trestles a couple of years ago.

There are other dry stone foundation walls along the Kettle Valley Railway, all in good condition (primarily in the Myra Canyon area). These are the same dry stone walls which were built as part of the foundation for one or two of the trestles in 1913/1914. They were not damaged in the 2003 fire and still serve as support for the trestles. There are also stone ovens in the old construction camps in Myra Canyon, probably built by Italian workers. There are other ovens near Naramata as well. Those at Naramata are in good shape and have been restored and cared for by a group known as "The Woodwackers".
