John Scott, who did stonework in Manitoba with Algonquin College students, sent us some pictures of dry stone walls in a very northern part of Canada. These show walls near Churchill, Manitoba, overlooking the west coast of Hudson's Bay, where a WWII era freighter ran ashore over a half century ago. The walls mark the boundary to a sled dog area where the quartize bedrock peeks through flat tundra amongst stashes of glacial granite, gniess and limestone balls, washed clean by ancient shorelines: an impossibly harsh landscape which attests to the persistence of dry stone walls.
