The 4th dry stone walling workshop held by the DSWAC in Bethany this winter ( 2007 ) involved teaching participants how to build a slightly curved wall. Neither the curve of the wall, nor the learning curve was that steep, as the students were successfully taught how to maintain a batter without the help of string lines. The group went on the next day to build another section granite fieldstone wall and also completed a small dry stone 'Arc de Triomphe' as a cheek-end garden feature. A dinner and great social evening with everyone in Bethany on the Saturday night , (provided for by DSWAC member Deb Northey,) was perhaps the highlight of the weekend. January has been a great month of dry stone walling in Canada. Many of the students who have been taking these courses are now ready to get walling outside, as soon as the snow melts.
